It took me hours to teleport everyone back to Maluhia in between healing those I could. The witches, sprites and I worked together to save those we could. Unfortunately some succumbed to their wounds before anyone got a chance to be there and help. There were too many wounded and we were spread thin. A lot more sprites were lost in the war than anyone first thought. Evander and a few others were building a special, elevated pyre for the sprites in honor and tribute of their sacrifice of trying to save those in the heat of battle.
I sat in a chair in front of the long line of wood built pyres with bodies laid side by side. Fredekâs clan along with the herd of Rydell built the pyres on the Maluhia shore, far enough away from the dead grass that grew in the sand and away from the houses and tents where everyone would be resting after this send off.
Exhausted, emotionally and physically, I came to the shore to rest a bit. I didnât want to be around a lot of beings. I wasnât in the mood for conversation or getting clapped on the back for killing Diomedes. I didnât want the praise. Always stay humble, my dad regularly said before going into a spiel about just keeping a straight face and nodding.
I found my dad prior to coming here to sit on the beachfront. The relieved look in his eyes and the big hug he gave me spoke volumes more than his words could. I was glad he didnât ask me about what I had done; instead, asking me if I wanted a snack. I grinned, reflecting about it and the jerky pack he handed me. Always with the jerky, I sniffed, wiping a tear from my eye. I hadnât realized how much it meant to me and how greatly I appreciated the simple gestures.
After checking in with my dad, I went back to my tent to see my cat. Luell was still inside the containment bubble I kept her in. Her food and water were knocked over, no doubt pissed I kept her safeguarded. I spent a few minutes with her, snuggling against her since she allowed it. Once Luell was done with my affection, she clawed her way out of my arms and snuggled herself on the bed. So I left her and meandered down to the beach.
I ran a hand over my face and groaned. It broke my heart that we lost so many. I had Molner make a list, taking the names and ages of the wolves who passed. We lost a fourth of our pack and I dreaded having to face them all. Some wolves I knew like Deryn and Brody who didnât make it. I didn't know if the mothers and children in the Vidis forest could sense their loved ones passing. It made my heart hurt all the more, wondering how and what I was going to tell them. No words could ease the ache or offer any comfort.
